The Nubian Book Club is a network of students, parents, educators, and community members who are engaged in the academic and social wellbeing of students within the York Region District School Board and surrounding area.

Our vision is to use literacy as a tool for incubating student success, leadership skills and community engagement among our youth, particularly those of African and Caribbean heritage. In this context, the Book Club meetings provide a non-judgmental, supportive and dynamic environment in which students develop their critical thinking, literacy and social skills.

The process for this includes a series of bi-weekly meetings in which selected literature is collectively explored, where special guests such as authors, academics and community leaders reflect on their experiences, and where students hone their social skills.

Following the success of last year’s chosen book, (Letters To A Young Brother, by Hill Harper,) we will be exploring his next book, Letters To A Young Sister, during this summer’s session.
